They will learn how to implement these evidence based parenting techniques to help a foster youth be successful.

Helping children heal from abuse or neglect is rewarding but hard. Like the children in their care, resource parents often feel overwhelmed by strong feelings and are unsure how to take care of themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
During this training, participants will explore the following objectives:
1. Why is self-care essential?
2. How does my child’s trauma affect me?
3. What are some tips for parenting children who have been traumatized?
4. The barriers to good self-care.
5. The road to good self-care.

Kentucky Autism Center presents a training on importance of teaching social skills. Participants will learn what skills to teach, how to determine skill deficits vs. performance deficits, and methods to teaching these skills.

Kentucky Autism Training Center will present a training about how puberty can affect children with autism. Foster parents will learn special considerations to consider when teaching spectrum children about puberty. Participants will have resources that they can apply in their foster homes.

This presentation gives a general overview of ADHD types and symptoms throughout several developmental stages. A trauma informed approach and co-existing conditions are also discussed. The journey to diagnosis is presented while highlighting various behavior scales frequently used. Finally, treatment options are presented including behavior therapies/parent training, referrals to specialists, floor time and medications. The addendum includes a variety of teaching sheets and resource links for participants’ further research.

There is a tip sheet attached and helpful ideas for building a relationship with your foster child from the beginning.

After adoption, sometimes challenges present with the child or youth. This video explains Post Adoption Placement Stabilization Services that are offered in Kentucky. This service is for adoptive parents that have had a previous DCBS adoption.
